“If I were in Stefan’s place, I would probably act like Damon, I would save Elena instead of Matt. All of us would actually, because there’s only tiny amount of people who are selfless. Because by saving Elena, he wouldn’t be saving her so she can live, he would be saving her because he can’t live without her.
Stefan’s and Damon’s actions on the matter not only reflect what kind of people they are, but how well they know Elena. Do you know who kept holding Elena in his arms while she was crying and blaming herself for what happened to the people she loves? Yes, it was Stefan. Not Damon. Damon was not there to drag her body out from her parents car, and he did not see a father sacrificing his life for their child. He did not see something in Elena that made him stay like Stefan did, no, he compelled her to forget ever meeting him. She was not crying into his arms when she found out she’s adopted, and he was not there, kissing her shoulder while she was holding her dead brothers body in her arms. And he was not there to see how much she loves her aunt and he was not there to sacrifice his life for hers. And he did not have to drag her from her best friend’s dead body as she sacrificed her life for Elena’s. And he was not there when Alaric died, and he had not seen pain and tears in her eyes, and he did not hear her voice cracking when she said they lost yet another friend, and how her and Jeremy have no one to take care of them. No, that was all Stefan, taking in her pain and suffering and sharing it with her through three seasons, and counting. Damon was not there when she cried and said she can’t lose anymore people she loves. And most importantly, he was not under the water when she fought Stefan to save one of the people she loves instead of her. And he did not see the look in her eyes, and he did not have that moment of understanding with her, and all the times when she cried and blamed herself for people close to her dying did not flash before his eyes. Because those moments are reserved to Stefan. And that is why Stefan did what he did. Because Stefan knew there’s one thing Elena wants more than grow up and have children and live a normal life, and that is to protect her friends and family, and keep them safe. You see, Damon has no right making decisions in Elena’s name because he doesn’t know the first thing about Elena. And a person with whom she shared everything respects her enough to let her make her own decisions.”
